P r e s s C o v e r a g e FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Mike Atkins Ground Zero Youth Ministry New London Presbyterian Church 1986 Newark Road / P.O. Box 269 New London, PA 19360 Phone: 610-869-7332 (office) Fax: 610-869-4733 Email: GZYouth@aol.com Web site: www.GZYouth.com New London, PA – August 29, 2002 – The Ground Zero Youth Ministry of New London Presbyterian Church (NLPC) will be hosting a See You at the PoleTM (SYATP) pre-rally for all students, grades 6 through 12 on Friday, September 13th at 7 pm. This pre-rally, like the upcoming See You at the PoleTM National day of Student Prayer, is student organized and student run. The evening is designed to explain to area students what See You at the PoleTM is all about through skits, drama, worship and a message and then encourage and empower the students to get involved by helping to lead See You at the Pole prayer meetings at their school flag pole on Wednesday, September 18th at 7 am. These students will not be praying alone on the 18th. Millions of other teenagers across the nation and around the world will be joining with them in prayer at this, the 13th annual See You at the PoleTM. “We really want to use this rally to encourage students to pray with their classmates for their friends, their teachers, their schools, their nation, and its leadership,” said Mike Atkins, youth pastor of NLPC. Amanda Bauguess, a senior at Oxford Area High School said, “The pre-rally is all about pumping us up to go to the pole. It’s great because you meet the other people from your school who will be there on the 18th, so you know you won’t be praying alone.” “Praying around the pole is so encouraging,” said Erin Neidigh, a sophomore at McKean High School. “You are gathering with other people of faith. It’s a time to share what you want prayer for and to pray for others. We saw so many answered prayer requests last year, it blew me away.” Phil Khandros, a senior at Elkton High School echoed Neidigh’s sentiments. “It’s amazing what a little bit of prayer can do for your school.” In 2001, just 3 days after September 11th, the Ground Zero Youth Ministry held its first SYATP pre-rally to encourage over 175 area students to join with their classmates around their school’s flagpole at 7am on the third Wednesday of September to pray. Just a few days later, barely a week after our nation faced it’s most traumatic event of the past decade, “Avon Grove High School had almost 100 students out front praying. It was incredible to see how God was working in people’s lives,” said Kevin Crossan, a senior there. Christine O’Connor, class of 2002 said, “After See You at the Pole, a ton of people started coming out to the morning prayer meeting we had in the cafeteria before homeroom. It was awesome.” Neidigh said, “We had tons and tons of prayer requests at our school. I put one in for my Aunt Joy who had cancer. Now she is completely cancer free and I know that wasn’t the only prayer request that got answered that day.” SYATP.com reports that more than 3 million young people met for SYATP in all 50 states of the U.S and in countries on six continents in 2001. See You at the PoleTM is a student-initiated and student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas, in 1990. It originated with just one youth group, praying at night at several schools around Burleson during a weekend retreat. During the past 12 years, millions of young people have lifted voices, bended knees and joined hands to pray for their schools as part of See You At the Pole- National Day of Student Prayer, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and their countries. All teenagers are invited to come out and learn more about See You at the PoleTM at the Ground Zero SYATP pre-rally. In addition to the funny skits, dramas, and empowering message, all youth, grades 6 through 12, will enjoy free pizza and food, upbeat music, basketball, the latest video games systems, air hockey, foosball, pool, ping pong, chess matches and hanging out with friends. Ground Zero is the Youth Ministry of New London Presbyterian Church located in Historic New London, PA and was established in January 2000.
