P r e s s C o v e r a g e FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Movement of Praying Youth Continues to Grow New London, PA – Sept. 4, 2002 – Lifting up prayers for America, its leaders, and its youth, students throughout the U.S. & the World will join together around their school flagpoles on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 AM local time for the 13th annual See You at the PoleTM (SYATP). See You at the PoleTM is a student-initiated and student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas, in 1990. It originated with just one youth group, meeting at night at several schools around Burleson during a weekend retreat. It has spread across the U.S. and to countries on six continents, including Australia, Canada, Cayman Islands, China, Finland, Ghana, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, S. Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Philippines, Puerto Rico, S. Africa, Swaziland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. During the past 12 years, millions of young people have lifted voices, bended knees and joined hands to pray for their schools as part of See You At the Pole- National Day of Student Prayer, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and their countries. “Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down” is the 2002 See You at the PoleTM theme, quoting from Isaiah 64:1-2. The prophet’s cry for God to reveal himself and “make His name known” is echoed in the fervent spirit of many teenagers as they have gathered for See You at the Pole over the years. In 2001, barely a week after the terrorist attacks on America of September 11th, more than 3 million young people met for SYATP in all 50 states of the U.S. Many prayed passionately for their country in crisis. “Right after 9-11, we prayed for our nation and for God to lead President Bush. We prayed for everyone who was going through a hard time to turn to God, and that we, as people of faith, would be a city on a hill, that our friends could turn to and lean on for strength,” said Amanda Bauguess, a senior at Oxford Area High School. Church congregations nationwide plan to show support for See You at the PoleTM by sponsoring special “Campus Challenge” pre-rally commissioning services the weekend before on September 13th through the 15th. The Ground Zero Youth Ministry of New London Presbyterian Church (NLPC) is hosting a special youth event Friday, September 13th to explain to area students what See You at the PoleTM is all about and to empower them to lead a See You at the PoleTM Prayer day at their schools. Mike Atkins, Youth Pastor at NLPC said, “We’ll have a live band, skits, dramas, worship & a powerful message lined up, all of which have been organized and will be student led.” “I really hope everyone comes out. It’s an incredibly awesome time!” said Kevin Crossan, senior at Avon Grove High School. There is no financial requirement to be included in See You at the Pole. Everything necessary for students to plan and promote a successful SYATP is available free at www.syatp.com and at the Ground Zero Pre-SYATP rally on Friday, September 13th to be held at NLPC.
