P r e s s C o v e r a g e Area Students Gather to Pray at the Pole By Marcella Peyre-Ferry Young people across the county and across the world came together around flagpoles before the start of school September 17 to join hands and pray. The event was See You At The Pole – a grassroots prayer event that began in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas in 1990. See You At The Pole is not a demonstration, political rally or a stand for or against anything. It is a student-initiated and student-led event. It is a national day of prayer, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and their countries. In Chester County, See You At The Pole was well supported at a number of schools, including Avon Grove High School, Oxford High School, Avon Grove Intermediate School, Fred S. Engle Middle School and the Avon Grove Charter School. At the Avon Grove High School alone there were more than 60 students joined in prayer. “This is a way to show our faith,” said Avon Grove High School 11-grader Lindsay Pincin, who has been taking part in the observance for six years. “People ask questions. We can show them who we are and who we stand for.” “Because I love God, I want to show the world. I want to make a difference in the school. I want to know that lives have been touched,” Avon Grove High School 11-grader Emily Hendricks said. Hendricks took part in See You At The Pole last year as well. Students show their faith throughout the school year. Avon Grove High School 11th-grader Rob DiIenno takes part in a brief morning prayer group in the school cafeteria as well as a “30-second kneel-down” at his locker. “I really felt called to do it,” he said. He was pleased to see that so many of his fellow students took part in See You At The Pole as well. “This is pretty cool that there’s so many.” The theme for See You At The Pole this year was “Consumed” referring to 1 Kings 18:26-39 where the Old Testament prophet Elijah tells a story that shows God’s power. “Elijah stepped forward and prayed. ‘…let it be known today that you are God…that you are turning their hearts back again’… then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt offering…when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, ‘the Lord, He is God…’”. Last year, more than 2.5 million young people in all 50 states and countries on six continents came together for the event. This year, the turnout was expected to be even higher. See You At The Pole is being held during Global Youth Prayer Week, Sept. 14-20, and is sponsored by the Youth Commission Of World Evangelical Alliance. “I just give thanks that we’re allowed to do it and not get persecuted for it,” she said, though she admitted there could be some teasing from classmates. “At least they’re asking questions,” said Hendricks.
