Letter # 1
Dear Drew:
first, i'll start off saying, that today (Oct 11, 1999) i was @ the EC campus.. my name is brandie, im a senior in HS, and interested in going to eastern. i didnt get to hear much from the students @ eastern today, so could you tell me from your point of view, what you think of eastern?
thanx!

in Him..
brandie

Dear Brandie:
>>>what do you really like about this school?<<<

- Freshmen are allowed to have cars on campus (parking is a nightmare, but most schools don't allow you to have cars at all)

- We have the most Guy/Girl floor visitation hours you will find on any Christian college campus. This gives you personal privacy when you want it, but it allows you to visit your friends too.
     - We get 6-10pm Mon, Tues, & Thurs.
     - Friday & Sat. are 2pm to midnight
     - Sunday is 2 to 10pm and there is no visitation on Wednesday.
     - If I added that up right, that is 40 hours a week. I visited 13 Christian schools between PA and Indiana and as far south as Virgina and many of them don't give you any visitation hours during the week, or maybe only a few on like one day or something. Anyways - enough about that

- We have reasonable size classes. Admissions will tell you that the ratio is like 1 prof for 13 students - thats a little low. The truth is you only one or two 100+ lecture style courses and those might have been eliminated this year in favor of smaller sections. I'm not really sure. Things have changed from my freshman year. The rest of the classes average around 30 students I guess. Its not to bad, and if you want individual attention, most professors have sufficient office hours so that you can sign up and stop in when you need to talk, or get extra info or help or just to be friendly or whatever.

- The campus is really pretty with lots of Trees, and three large ponds. We have a nature trail and plenty of places to sit and think. The only anoyance is the large population of Canadian Geese who live here.

- We have direct internet access in almost every room on campus so you can bring your computer, buy a network card, and have 24-7 access to email and web browing without the $20/month fee for using American Online. If you do have AOL, you can use TCP/IP access instead of your phone line which means everything on AOL is 10 times faster. (Assuming your computer is new enough to handel it and not running a 66 mhz processor like mine was my first year)

- They'll have the newist residence hall (North Campus Hall or NCH) built by the time you get here so most of the triples will be elimated and you will probably get a reasonable size room and only have to share it with one other person. If you want a homey dorm, request Doane Hall. If you want something modern with lots of space and climate controls request the NRH, Hainer West, or the New New Residence Hall over by Eagle and Heritage House that is being built. I live in Doane and will I will probably stay here for my last year and a half. We are Family in Doane. I really like It here.

- If your not into traditional sports, you can try our Ultimate Frisbee team. Everyone is welcome. There are no tryouts. You don't have to know anything about the game when you get here. We teach you everything you need to know. (that was my plug - I'm the coordinator and Webmaster for the team. http://esther.eastern.edu/~ultimate I kinda have to say something about it. I really enjoy playing - We just got back from a tournament and I had a lot of fun.)

That's what I know. if you have other questions let me know. I'm really busy, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

PS - The nice thing about talking to students on a campus instead of the admission's staff, is that admissions people get paid to say goodthings about the school. I don't. I just like it here.

PPS - Now that its the year 2000, classes have gotten a lot more crowded and its much harder to get into the classes you want to take.

Dear Drew:
dude.. thanx for the info. and dont worry about the reply... im just glad that you DID reply to me.. lemme think......... specific questions................
-- how has eastern influenced your walk w/God?
-- how have you grown @ eastern?
-- what are the ppl like @ eastern?
-- anything else you may want to add.. have a GREAT weekend.
in Him.. brandie

Dear Brandie:
>>>how has eastern influenced your walk w/God?<<<
- It is not hard to find acountablity. Most freshman come in and either are on Fire, or get on fire really quick. You find a small group. You go to chaple every week. You find a local church you like. Everything is cool. You grow in God because your Old testement, New Testament, and theological thinking professors challenge what you think you know so that you will grow. I am now in my junior year and I wish I had the fire I came in with as a freshman. I got laxadasical in my devotions and I slipped from there. I pulled away from my acountablity group Etc.

If you submit yourself to others and you activily look for areas to be used by God, Eastern is a great place to grow your faith. However - we are in a bubble here. Most of the campus is saved and the rest don't let you know that they are not. There is not a lot of new salvations taking place each and every day here. What you find more of is the exspanding and depening of beleifs. We challeng each others theology so that we understand ourselves better and then we agree to disagree. There are plenty of local churches and outreach oppertunities to get involved with and I just never found anything that compared to what I was involved with at home and I let myself fall. It had nothing to do with EC.

>>>how have you grown @ eastern?<<<
I now know why I beleive most of what I believe. I can back most of it up with scripture and I can find the references for the rest if I need them. THat has been the biggest growth in my life. I have been challenged by other view points from students of other backgrounds. (I've learned a lot about youth ministry too - since that kinda is my major)

>>>what are the ppl like @ eastern?<<<
Some are snobby, Most are nice, There are a few gossip circles to look out for, The female to male ratio is grossly against you. Its like 4:1. If your mom wants to send you here to find a husband, this might be the wrong school. Many Ladies find the men of their dreams but some do not. Just FYI.

Bottom line - your not going to find an exceptional group of people here, just because it a christian school. You will find a group of people where it is almost safe to leave your dorm room unlocked. Where you always have a support group of friends around you when your going through something. There is never a shortage of people to stay up with you when your crying at 2 AM for whatever reason. People here do care. I think this is a great school as far as that goes. If you walk into a room upset, someone, (ussually someone you know) is going to come over and sit and talk with you and whatever.

Despite the rules - We do have about 150 students out of the 1000 undergrads who admit that they smoke - they just go off campus to do it. There are the occational drinking parties, but you will never hear or see them, unless you run in the wrong circles. I'm sure we have some drug use, although I have never seen it.

No College is perfect. I think i can honestly say that I feel that we are better than any state school you find, and most of the private colleges. I'm very happy here. It may not seem that way, but I wanna make sure your coming in with your eyes open. Thats whats up

Later

Hey Drew...
thanx for the good and the bad w/EC. i realize that it wont be perfect, cuz life isnt perfect really.. as far as the drinking and drugs go...... i hope that is something i dont face.. no thanx. i dont want that!! finding a hubby.... thats not something im really looking into rite now.. rite now, i have a boyfriend who i care a lot about, and im not sure how college is gonna be for us.. only God knows what is gonna happen in the next 5 yrs.

i want to thank you for your time and effort to type this stuff for me. it means a lot to know more of what the students feel instead of what the book says. so....... i thank you .. in Him.. bran

Letter # 2
Dear Drew:
Hello, my name is katie and I am looking into Eastern. Can you answer some questions for me? Is there any type of dress code at this school and what do you really like about this school? Im a senior in high school and I have not decided on a school yet, so if you could tell me stuff that'd be great!
Katie

Dear Katie:
>>>Is there any type of dress code at this school<<<
No - no dress code. They request decency, but I have seen a few outragious looks from time to time go uncommented on so I don't think they even enforce that. We are very liberal and you are pretty much allowed to dress how you like. Your average student wears blue jeans and a t'shirt or something. Some wear k-mart wranglers, others prefer Gap, but no-one really makes a big deal about what you wear.

Letter # 3
Dear Drew:
Hi, my name is Kellene and I'm currently a junior in high school in Bucks County PA. I'm extremely interested in Eastern College because I'm a born-again Christian and I've heard "rave reviews" that it has awesome Christian organazations there. I'm also interested in youth ministry. Could you give me some insight to the college?? Thanks soooo much!

aka Gopher
><>

Dear Kellene:
I'm in the youth min program too. get passed the first two into course and the scripture memory tests and your all set. Duffy, Darrel, and TJ are all great guys. We are working on getting a female professor on staff too. The Christians are real. The professors will challenge your beleifs and make you deepen them and I really don't have any complaints about this college that you won't find people complaining about elsewhere.
We let freshman have cars on campus (but parking sucks - as it does at all colleges) We have the most guy/girl floor visitation hours of any Christian school I know. a few, every night of the week except Wednesday.
Chapel isn't mandatory - but almost everyone goes. The few students who do smoke, drink, and do drugs do so at such times and at such places, that if you ever run into one in the act, it will be a rare occation.
We have a rockin swing dance club on campus. The Ultimate Frisbee team is our own little family and we have a lot of fun. Everyone is welcome to come and play and join the team (http://esther.eastern.edu/~ultimate)
I'm gonna go to bed now - I have an early class. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll be happy to respond to them.
I don't get paid by the admissions office and I'm still think this is a great school. As you visit schools, make sure you try to eat a meal with some regular students who don't nessisarily work for the admissions staff. See how friendly they are and ask them your questions about the school. They are your inside track to the nitty gritty things about the campus you won't find out about till you get there. Remember the admissions tour guides are paid to tell you its a great campus. Thats my advice. That and get your family taxes in early so that you can get the financial aid stuff filled out early.

P.S. Three notes...
First - It is never to early to start looking for colleges,
Second, it is never too early to start looking for scholarships and gathering the information you will need to apply for them so that, when you become eligible, you will know it and you will be prepared.
Third - I don't work for the admissions office, I just like it here.

Letter # 4
Drew,
This e-mail may be a little strange.  I went to your web page to get an idea of Eastern College.  You have done a fine job, hope your Mom is okay.  I live in Califorina and I am a Junior at Azusa Pacific University.  The reason I am looking into Eastern is because a group of us are goming out to PA to do a church plant.  I may transfer to Eastern if God would make that possible.  So what do you think of Eastern?

jen b.

Dear Jen:

Hey Jenn, your email is not strange at all. I get emails all the time. Yes, my mom is fine, so is my bother (he was driving at the time). The car was rebuilt and then sold, and we later found out that it was again in an auto accident, but that really doesn't matter now, does it :-) Thanks for askin though. Um, Eastern...
I am a senior, a Youth Min major, and I do NOT work for the admissions office, which basically means that some people get paid to tell you they like it here, and others don't. Oh well - thats the way the world turns. Moving right along...
I love it. Its a great school. We have good professors. Things are getting better all the time. They are also getting worse, but that is true of any institution. We are a small family here. There are 1000 undergrads on campus, but with a small campus and tight family, it is often said that, "when someone sneazes in Gallup hall (on the NE end of campus) the people in Doane (the SW end of campus) know about it 5 minutes later. We are struggling to find the ballence between meeting the demand for increased growth, while maintaining the small campus feel, that is drawing so many people here. To be honest, that is one struggel that makes me glad to be graduating in May. The campus is beautiful, but not as beautiful as it was when I first arrived. I am glad that we have reached the limit on the number of students who can live on campus and have been banned from any further construction projects. I would really hate to see anymore of this beautiful campus replaced by buildings. There are three beautiful ponds and lots of trees and places to walk. The cannadian geese are really annoying and should be shot, but that comes with the teritory. Our biggest crime problem is probably minor theft and the once or twice a year incident of car vandelisms, but both of those are few and far between. We feel pretty safe leaving our bags outside the cafeteria and our car doors unlocked (although I always lock mine).
We are a Christian college, but students are given a lot of freedom. About 8% (80 or so students of 1000) violate the no-smoking policy, although you really have to go looking for it, to find it. No-one smokes in their room, on thier hall, in the bathroom, or openly on campus. We are sex separated by floor in our dorms. We have the most lenient visitation hours (when you are allowed on the other sex's floor without risking a fine) of any chrisian school I know off. We have visitation 6 days a week. 6-10PM on Mon, Tues, Thursday / 2-12 on Friday and Saturday / and 2-10 on sunday. Thats not half bad, and the student body just voted to exspand those hours further. This has been in the works for several years now and I am very pleased that it is finally going through. The Student Goverment has also formally requested that the Registrar make a 4 year, achademic course schedule available so that incoming students can plan which classes they intent to take to complete thier graduation requirements during thier freshmen year. This has been sorely needed for several years and I hope it goes through as well.
As a Junior, I am not sure how many of your credits will transfer here. I just checked out the Cateloge or "green book" as we call it. "Specific course credit is granted for college courses when content is equicalent to Eastern Courses" but you "must have received a C or better, in those classes for them to qualify". You need 127 credits to graduate, 32 of which must be completed at Eastern. I don't know how that will play into your thinking. If you want to finish fast, you might be better off staying there till graduation. Transfering late in the game like this always messes things up.
I just talked to a freshmen who arrived here this fall from california, and I asked him for his thoughts, hoping that he might be able to offer you some insites, being from the same state. I am of no help in this area, as my parents live less than an hour from the school. He said, and I quote, "It's freaking cold out here!!" but he also commented that while Azusa Pacific is really expensive, they have a lot of rules. Eastern doesn't have a lot of rules and he feels that that gives us more room to grow and mature spiritually because our Character is called into question more often. We have to use our own judgement more her, then you do when you are at a school with a lot of rules. Some people say we aren't Christians because of our lack of rules, but Brendon feels that our lack of rules makes us better Christians and forces us to grow in our faith, or sink like a rock; to be hot or cold, but not luke warm. Spiritally is a big thing on Campus. We are a family here. When you need someone, there is always someone there for you.
I am sure that you know what I mean when I say, "Its that time of year again." Finals, Papers, Projects and personal emotional and spritual breakdowns are occuring all around us and the rule here is... if you aren't going through something, than one of your friends is... and one of the things that I love about Eastern, is despite all our failings, we take care of our own.
This is especially true of the Ultimate Frisbee team, which I help coordinate. If there is something on this campus that I would term a true sarogate family, the Ultimate Frisbee team is it. We take care of our own. Anyways....
Eastern is a good school. You'll get an education here. Make sure you play the credits game carefully. We have a lot of weird core and breath requirements that aren't always covered by other universities. If something doesn't transfer, then they give you elective credit for it, but you can petition the dean or assistant dean (Dr. David Frasier and Dr. Laurie Schriener) to get things covered. I can give you their e-mail addresses if that would be helpful. Admissions might be able to help some to, but ultimatly, the dean has the last word, so make sure you clear stuff with Frasier or Schriener. Even if you wind up losing some credits by transfering, Brendon says that Azusa Pacific is like 30 or 35 grand a year. Eastern is only 22 grand so you might come out ahead, even if it takes an extra semester and even if you count the cost of airtravel home and back again over breaks.
There are a lot of good churches here to hook up with. Several activily contribute to the communities they are in. Some churches here in the suburbs on the very Rich, main line area have even partnered with some inner city churches to work together pooling people and financial resourses to do some good in the community. Where in PA are you planning on doing the church plant? What type of church is it? I'm just curious. I've been a methodist, a carasmatic, a pentacostal, a presbyterian, and now I am attending a community church... go figure. Also - what is your major, i might be able to give you some more info about the department you are looking into.
I have tryied to be frank, honest and helpful. I hope you find this information of use to you. If I can answer any other questions, please email me and let me know.

-- Drew Cope --

P.S. The Cafeteria Food is, well,... Cafeteria food. Its not especially good, but its not especially bad. :-) just thought you'd like to know.

P.P.S. - There is a 2:1 ratio of Women to Men on this campus. The last numbers I saw were like 650 : 350 women to men.

P.P.P.S. - Live in Doane - Its the tightest, most family oriented dorm on campus. We are tight over here. But we are also far away from the other dorms, but we are closer to the dinning hall, and the classrooms. The best part, is since freshman can't have cars in the resident hall lots and Doane is a 60% freshmen building, we never have a parking problem over here, like they do on the rest of campus. of my 7 semesters on campus and 1 to go, I have only spent 1 semester in another residtence hall, and that was my first semester on campus.

P.P.P.P.S. - Annoint and pray over any letters or documentation before mailing it to the Financial Aid, or Student Accounts office and make a photocopy of them for yourself. I know from personal experience and from the stories of my friends that with 1500 plus students to handle, things can get lost.

P.P.P.P.P.S. - this is the last one, i promise. Dispite all my post scripts... I really do like it here and its a great school, and if God has called you to come here, the pack your bags, and get on the plane. And tell the first Ultimate Frisbee player you meet on campus, that Drew sent you.

Dear Jen:
One more note... If you transfer in, and have to take OUR Western Civ class, OUR justice in a pluralistic society, OUR Science Tech and Values, OUR Langauge Requirements and all the other 'core' crap that they make everyone do, I am totally guessing here, but it would seem reasonable that you would have to make up quite a bit of ground. Pray about it - See where the Lord leads. People to contact are the Achedemic Dean, the Registar, Admissions, etc... Also, check out the school web site - as I am sure you already have. It looked like they had good undergrad stuff up there, but not a lot geared to transfer students. You can e-mail the undergraduate admissions department directly at ugadm@eastern.edu. See what they tell you about what credits will and will not transfer. Then you can try the associate registrar, Marty Meyer - Just tell her what you want to do, and ask her what she thinks will transfer and what won't. Then finally, you can petition Dr. Laurie Schreiner, assistant Achedemic Dean. She actually has special forms that you are supposed to use for petitioning for transfer credits and she may not even be able to start that process until you arrive but she should be able to give you an indication about what you can and can't do.

Start with the admissions office. At Eastern, on occation, you can fast track your way somewhere by going straight to the top, but you gain more friends, and make less enemies, if you start at the bottom and work your way through the system. Also, It's important to talk with the head of the department that you plan to major in. You can find some of their contact information on each of the department web sites listed here.
