How to configure your computer for the Eastern Network

- Click on the Start menu
- Click settings
- Click control panel
- Click network
- Under the Configuration Tab:
- First
i.
Highlight any clients (descriptions with blue computer icons
next to them) and then click the remove button.
ii. In
the box labeled “The following network components are installed” verify that
your network card is listed (it has a green icon next to it) and that you have
the TCP/IP protocol listed and labeled similarly to your network card adaptor.
iii. If
your network card is not there, consult a guru
iv. If
TCP/IP is not there

Click the add button
·
Click protocol
·
Click add
·
Click Microsoft
·
Scroll down the right hand list and select TCP/IP
·
Click the OK Button
v. Optional
(may be necessary on some machines)
·
Select the TCP/IP protocol from the components list
·
Click properties
·
Click the DNS Configuration Tab
·
Click the circle labeled enable DNS
·
Enter your login name into the host box
·
Enter Eastern.Edu into the domain box
·
Enter 204.78.0.198 into the DNS Server Search Order box
·
Click Add
·
Click ok

Click on Client for NetWare Networks
ii. Click
add
iii. Click
client
iv. Click
Add
v. Click
on Microsoft
vi. Click
on Client for NetWare Networks
vii. Click
the “OK” button
- Under the Identification Tab:
- Where it says computer
name, type in your Login Name (the first part of your eastern e-mail
address)
- Where it says
workgroup, type the name of the dorm you live in (Doane, Guffin, Gallup,
Gough, Hainer, NCH, Kea)
- Where it says computer
description, type whatever you want, cause it really doesn’t matter but
if you have a laptop, don’t tell people on the network that you have a
laptop. That’s just dumb.
- Under Access Control:
- click the circle next
to “User-level access control”
- Type MOSES in the
blank field at the bottom of that screen where it says: “Obtain list of
users and groups from”
- Click okay
- If it asks for you windows
CD, put it in the CD-Rom Drive.
- If you don’t have your disk,
try entering C:\Windows\options\Cabs
- If that doesn’t work,
borrow a disk from a friend!
- When it asks you to reboot
your Computer, click yes
- You should get a login
screen.
- If you don’t…
- Make sure that your
network cable is plugged in to both the computer and the wall.
- Check to see if the
lights are on in your network card.
(look at the back of your computer where the cable plugs in)
- If the lights aren’t
on, contact Computing at ext 1726 and ask them to verify that your room
is turned on.
- If the lights are on
and you didn’t get a login screen, then the server is currently down.
- If you are using a hub…
- Make sure that the
cable going to the wall is plugged into jack 6, and that the computers
are plugged into any of the other jacks 1-4, but NOT jack 5.
TO
CONFIGURE EMAIL
- Open outlook express.
- If it asks you if you want
this to be your default mail program, click YES.
- Click Tools
- Click Accounts
- Click Add
- Click Mail
- Type your full name as you
want it to appear in emails
- click next
- Click the circle next to “I
already have an e-mail account”
- enter your eastern email
address complete with @eastern.edu
- click next
- change “incoming mail server”
from POP3 to IMAP
- Set both “incoming” and
“outgoing mail server” fields to Solomon.eastern.edu
- click next
- Type in your login name for
the account name
- type in your email password
- Check the “remember password”
box if you like
- Leave “log on using Secure
Password Authorization” blank
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- If it asks you to download
IMAP folders now, click yes.
